Investigators Discover Knives Possibly Used In Leila Fowler's Murder
VALLEY SPRINGS (CBS13) - Investigators are still searching for answers in the murder of 8-year old Leila Fowler in Calaveras County.
They are pouring over evidence and interviewing witnesses in the case. The road that leads to the family's home remains closed, and the house is still a crime scene after Saturday's deadly stabbing.
Investigators returned to the home Wednesday, combing for clues -- which led deputies to knives.
"We have collected a few knives that are being examined to see if one of the knives might have been the weapon used against Leila," Calaveras County sheriff's Sgt. Chris Hewitt said.
Investigators also discovered fingerprints and other DNA evidence at the Rippon Road home.
Wednesday morning, deputies made a 50 mile trip to Placerville to collect a DNA sample from a suspected kidnapper who tried to snatch a toddler.
"Right now there is no immediate evidence to suggest that case is anyway related to our, but are following up on that angle," said Hewitt.
Deputies haven't shown the Placerville suspects picture to Leila's 12-year-old brother, who saw his sister's killer. Her brother described the suspect as a man about 6-feet tall with long gray hair.
As the manhunt continues, community members remain on edge.
"I'm emotionally distraught over it and concerned about our children's welfare and safety," resident Robert McLine said.
In addition to help from the California Department of Justice, the FBI has been briefed in the case.
