California Endowment's Goal: Health For All

Paid Content

According to a recent UCLA study, nearly 5 million uninsured Californians can get access to prevention-based medical coverage in 2014 through federal health reform, but many of those eligible for Medi-Cal, the state's public insurance program, haven't enrolled.

The California Endowment aims to change this by educating communities about the benefits of the Affordable Care Act. And by doing so, it hopes to increase the number of children and adults enrolled in affordable health coverage. The California Endowment is reaching out to lower-income and Latino families to make them aware of the benefits of the ACA and connect them with enrollment information and assistance. They are also educating young Californians aged 18-26 about new provisions under the ACA.

Enrolling in health care coverage that includes a routine wellness program is just one element of accessing preventive care. Ensuring that the places where we live, learn, and play are healthy environments is essential to prevention. This involves people being their own health advocates and thinking about our communities differently. Residents and community leaders across all sectors working together can give rise to healthier communities.

What is the California Endowment Doing?

  • Increasing the capacity of residents, including youth, can gain a stronger voice and take part in efforts to improve their communities.
  • Strengthening programs and systems to work collaboratively within and across sectors to protect and promote health.
  • Promoting accessible, comprehensive, high-quality, prevention-oriented health care throughout one's life span--and bridging that care to advocacy for community conditions that support improved health outcomes.
  • Promoting a "health in all policies" approach in civic decision-making to assure that conditions where residents live, work, learn, and play protect and actively promote health.
