In Elk Grove, City Hopes To Promote Itself As Tourism Destination
ELK GROVE (CBS13) — Elk Grove leaders want to transform the city from a bedroom community to a vacation destination.
The city is hoping to attract people with a new website promoting Elk Grove as a place to eat, shop and play.
"There are a lot of small businesses and a lot of things that are unique here that they can't get downtown or somewhere else," said Beverly Hatfield.
It's also letting people promote the businesses they visit and sights they see on Twitter with the hashtag #inElkGrove.
Business owners hope it will then encourage more people to come here, which would then spur new life into empty spaces.
"We are hoping to bring in more unique shops and boutiques here in Elk Grove, so that's our future plan," said salon owner Sharon Camarillo.
This is just the first move by the city to increase sales around town. The real draw would come if the mall is finished, if they can build a soccer stadium in a currently empty field, or construct a water park.
"Right now we are setting the foundation for future plans that are underway. We are wanting the region to know about all that Elk Grove has to offer," said Christine Brainerd with the city.
