Ice Age Fossils Found At New Home Construction Site
CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) -- Fossils from the Ice Age, including bones of ancient mammoths and a prehistoric bison, have been found at a Southern California construction site where new homes are planned.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the fossils were found earlier this summer during grading at Quarry Creek in Carlsbad.
The developer, Cornerstone Communities of San Diego, says it has been working with paleontologists to protect them.
They include Columbian mammoths, horses and turtles.
Tom Demere of the San Diego Natural History Museum says they are 50,000 to 200,000 years old.
The bison fossil, which includes a skull and partial skeleton, will eventually be displayed at the museum.
More than 600 homes, mainly condos and apartments, are planned for the site.
