PLACER COUNTY – A pedestrian who tried to cross Interstate 80 near Auburn late Thursday night was hit and killed by a vehicle, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol's Auburn division said preliminary reports show that, around 10:15 p.m., a woman tried to cross from the westbound side to the eastbound side, where she was struck by a Nissan Versa.

The woman, 34, was declared dead at the scene by first responders. Her name has not yet been released.

After the collision, the Nissan driver remained at the scene and was cooperative with law enforcement.

Due to the crash, all eastbound traffic was diverted to exit at Russell Road. Drivers then got back on the freeway at Foresthill Road.

The lanes were reopened early Friday morning.
