Big Rig Crash Scatters Chickens All Over I-80

VACAVILLE (CBS13) –  A big rig carrying live chickens to slaughter collided with another tractor trailer early Thursday morning, dumping the birds all over the interstate, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened in Vacaville on Interstate 80 at Logoon Valley Road just before 2 a.m., and all lines of the interstate weren't reopened until just before 8 a.m.

Other big rig drivers noticed the truck carrying 5,000 chickens swerving and attempted to contact the driver, Gustavo Huerta, via CB radio thinking he may be falling asleep. But before they could reach him, his truck clipped another big rig carrying bottled water that was parked on the side of the road.

The impact broke open wooden pallets holding the chickens, hurling them to the ground. A Ford Escape driven by Anastasia Loban then struck and killed dozens of the chickens before swerving off the roadway, the CHP said.

Crews tried to capture the live chickens before they posed a hazard to other drivers.

Loban and her passenger, Knub Rasmussen were transported to Kaiser-Vacaville for treatment of minor injuries, the CHP said.

Huerta was not under the influence, the CHP said.
