Road Rage Incident Involving Gun Fire Shuts Down Interstate 5 In Woodland

WOODLAND (CBS13) – A crash that shutdown southbound Interstate 5 in Woodland for several hours began as a road rage incident with shots fired, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was first reported as a hit and run just before 3:00 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near County Road 102.

CHP says the incident began as a road rage incident between the occupants of a red Nissan and a white sub-compact at West El Camino and Interstate 80 in Sacramento and continued to the Woodland area.

One car apparently then rammed the other on southbound Interstate 5. It's believed someone from the Red Nissan then pulled out a handgun and shot at the other car.

No one was hit by bullets, but the red car was disabled and stalled in the lanes. It was then hit by two oncoming vehicles.

Investigators say the driver of the white car kept on going down Interstate 5 before pulling off at the next exit, hopping out and running to a Woodland Walgreen's Distribution Center asking for help.

"We have a lot more questions about how this started in Sacramento and was going back toward Sacramento," said Woodland CHP officer Ken Walter.

CHP officers kept southbound I-5 shutdown for more than four hours as the investigated the incident. It is still unclear if the people knew each other.

The two men from the red vehicle suffered minor injuries when their vehicle was hit by oncoming traffic, but have since been released from the hospital. They have been detained by officers along with the driver of the white car, but no arrests have been made yet.

The CHP wants to remind people to drive defensively.

"There's a lot of aggressive driving out there. The smarter person is going to disengage, take an offramp and get back on or slow down," said Officer Walter.

The names of the people involved have not been released.

No alcohol or drugs were found in either vehicle.
