Historical Society Holding Huge Yard Sale To Rebuild Rocklin's First Firehouse
ROCKLIN (CBS13) – The Rocklin Historical Society is holding one of the city's largest yard sales to raise money towards creating a piece of antiquity for years to come.
"People say 'why is there no downtown?' Well, the reason is we had fires," said Gene Johnson of the Rocklin Historical Society.
The overgrown lot on Rocklin's historic Front Street has remained empty since the 1940s after the city's first firehouse, which was built in 1893, was destroyed by fire like much of the original town.
The building also served as the town's city hall, library and marshal's office. But with Rocklin's Front Street lacking that nostalgic old town feel like Roseville and Auburn have, the historical society hopes to give it the TLC they say it deserves by building a replica of the firehouse.
"It's going to be a small building, but will be right next to the chapel where it originally sat," said Ronna Davis.
Shoppers will be able to sift through over 5,000 items such as century-old grinders and farm equipment. There is even a hand-made rocking horse, and mint condition designer Prada and Coach purses going for just a dollar each.
"We have a dollar an item; that's a great draw," said Johnson.
The yard sale runs Saturday only from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 5200 Fifth Street in Rocklin.
