Historic Tuolumne County Cemetery Vandalized
SONORA (CBS13) - An historic Tuolumne County cemetery has been hit hard by vandals including racial slurs spray-painted on a mausoleum.
The Odd Fellows Cemetery has been in Sonora since 1856.
Maintenance at the cemetery is difficult since the Odd Fellows group is made up of just a small group of elderly members.
Local historians say the Odd Fellows are a fraternal organization known for helping others and this type of vandalism is a shame.
"(They) don't seem to have any respect for the dead as well as the pioneers. Some of the pioneer families of Tuolumne County are buried in this cemetery," said Sharon Marovich of the Tuolumne Heritage Committee.
A volunteer has stepped forward to help maintain the property.
