Hiker Died Trying To Save Fellow Hiker At Yosemite

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) -- The wife of a missing hiker says he was trying to save his friend's life when they were swept over a bridge into a reservoir while returning from a backpacking trip at Yosemite National Park.

Paula Meyer told the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday that her husband, Gregory Meyer, was trying to hang on to Richard Fox after he slipped off the Wapama Falls bridge. The men both fell into the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir Wednesday morning.

The Whittier couple and Fox from Hacienda Heights were part of five hikers who had been backpacking for several days.

Authorities say Fox's body was found in the reservoir and Gregory Meyer is still missing as search efforts are ongoing.

Paula Meyer said the reservoir was the spot where her husband first proposed to her seven years ago and where he asked her to marry him again during this trip.

She said yes.
