Highway 50 Reopens Early
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (CBS13) -- Motorists will have an easier trek over the Sierra now that Highway 50 has reopened to traffic almost a week ahead of schedule.
Officials said contractor C.C. Meyers had planned to close the roadway between South Lake Tahoe and Placer County for two weeks to build a new barrier wall at Echo Summit, but even with heavy storms causing a 48-hour delay, traffic was able to begin traveling over the roadway Saturday afternoon.
The contractor earned more than $500,000 in bonuses due to the early completion, officials said. The deadline for the phase of the project was next Friday.
Traffic will still be affected by continuing construction on weekdays for up to six weeks. Highway 50 will remain fully open on weekends.
