UPDATE: Kyburz Fire 40% Contained; Highway 50 Controls Still In Place
SACRAMENTO (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service says a Northern California wildfire is about 40 percent contained as more than 800 people are battling the blaze.
Traffic along several miles of Highway 50 was being escorted in both directions Tuesday around the 160-acre blaze near Kyburz, about 40 miles west of South Lake Tahoe.
Officials say the fire in the El Dorado National Forest has not damaged any homes or required evacuations, although two other structures were damaged. The National Weather Service is forecasting light winds in the area.
The California Highway Patrol says the fire may have been sparked Monday by a broken axle from a motorhome towing a truck.
Officials with the Sugarloaf Fine Arts Camp near Pollock Pines say earlier reports of the camp being evacuated were incorrect.
