High-Speed Chase Ends After Crash In Sacramento
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- A 31-year-old Sacramento man was arrested Monday afternoon after he raced through a school zone at about 100 mph while school was being dismissed, according to police.
A Twin Rivers Police officer was on routine patrol at Foothill High School at about 2:30 p.m. when he observed a small, black Hyundai race through the school zone at Hillsdale and Robert Frost as hundreds of students were leaving school, according to police spokesman Officer William Cho.
The driver, Shawn Hawkins, evaded the officer and the pursuit was called off because of the risk, but a few minutes later the Sacramento Sheriffs' Department reported that the vehicle had been found and Hawkins and a female passenger had fled on foot.
Foothill Oaks Elementary was briefly locked down as a precaution, but the female was detained and Hawkins taken into custody, Cho said. Hawkins has been charged with reckless driving and endangerment, felony evasion and resisting arrest, Cho said. More charges may follow.
While Hawkins was in the back seat of a police car, he struck his head on the plastic barrier and suffered a minor wound to his head. Paramedics were called for him and he was treated at the scene and also taken to a local hospital for treatment before booking, Cho said.
