High School Football Game Becomes Touching Tribute
VACAVILLE (CBS13) - In the fall, Friday night means high school football. And at one Vacaville school, last night's game was about touch downs and a touching tribute.
Amidst the drumbeat of the band and the chants of the cheerleaders, a student's wish is granted.
Will C. Wood High School answered the call of a classmate, one week after she moved away. Lauren Ralph filled out the school's new wish list request, writing: "I wish that this whole school has a day to support everyone that had cancer."
Lauren's sister lost her battle with cancer. Lauren wrote her sister never got that support.
"We got the wishes last week on Wednesday and by Friday we werefull swing," said Tracy Ruiz, a Will C. Wood High School teacher.
The wish -- just a week old -- sparked the school's response. It was nothing expensive -- paper plates with messages on them honoring those who've died and those who are surviving.
"It's like a simple symbolic thing, and actually I think it means a lot. You don't need to be extravagant to mean anything," said Will C. Wood senior Katie Woo.
It's one wish granted; and there are thousands more to go.
"We've seen all kinds of different wishes -- from something as simple as 'I wish for my favorite candy' to a young lady to provide a memorial service for her grandmother because they couldn't afford it," said Ruiz.
It was a small act of support at a high school football game. It is one act of team spirit.
