High Profile LAPD Unit Takes Giants Fan Beating Case
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Police Department is transferring its investigation into the beating of a San Francisco Giants fan at Dodger Stadium to a special unit that handles high-profile cases.
The probe into the March 31 beating of Bryan Stow had been coordinated by detectives from the LAPD's northeast division, but on Wednesday the department said its central robbery-homicide unit is taking over.
Police say the demands of the case have become more complex and prolonged, and that robbery-homicide detectives are better equipped to handle it. The unit handles most of the city's celebrity and prolonged cases, such as the death of Michael Jackson.
More than two weeks after Giovanni Ramirez was arrested in the case, he has not been charged, though remains jailed on a parole hold.
A call to northeast detectives was not immediately returned.
