Heavy Rain And Snow Make Travel Treacherous; More Unstable Weather Forecasted
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – It was a treacherous commute for much of Northern California as a morning downpour caused a bevy of accidents as water pooled on Valley roadways and snow piled up on Sierra passes.
One person died in an accident on northbound Interstate 5 near Florin Road around 5:00 a.m. The driver lost control and slammed into a tree. It was raining heavily at the time of the crash, however, the exact cause is still under investigation.
There were a number of other spinouts reported around the same time on roadways around the Sacramento area.
In the Bay Area, there were some major problems as Highway 280 in San Jose was flooded after storm drains became clogged near Bird Avenue. Crews were able to clear the mess fairly quickly. No accidents were reported due to the flooding, however, it slowed the morning commute.
The heavy downpour comes the day after a tornado touched down in Stockton. The twister hit Wednesday afternoon at West Howard Road near French Camp and destroyed an outbuilding.
CBS13 Meteorologist Laura Skirde says we could see more of the same unstable weather this afternoon.
