Thunder, Lightning Signals Arrival Of Storm; Power Outages Reported
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The bulk of 2015's first major storm will hit just after the Friday morning commute.
Heavy rain and gusty winds are expected to arrive in the valley by noon.
The heaviest rain and strongest winds will come hit Friday afternoon through the evening between 4 and 6 p.m. Winds in the valley are expected to come from the south at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
Winds picked up in the Bay Area by mid-morning, delaying flights at San Francisco International Airport by an average of 4 and a half hours.
Around 9 a.m., a thunderstorm rolled through the Sacramento area and has caused power outages. According to SMUD, 3,839 people were without power in the Downtown Sacramento, Florin and Land Park areas, while another 4,143 people were without power near Sacramento Executive Airport. Power was restored around 11:30 a.m.
However, as of 11:30 a.m., crews are now working on a new power outage in the Arden Arcade area, near Arden Way and Fulton Avenue. According to SMUD, more than 1,700 people are without power due to an underground cable failure.
A lightning strike has also caused a service disruption on Sac RT's Blue Line light rail. Sac RT says that a bus bridge is in place from 13th Street to Meadowview.
Impressive rainfall totals are expected, as another round of rain is expected to hit Sunday through Monday.
