'He Has 72 Hours To Resign': Sacramento Homeless Union Pushes To Recall Mayor Steinberg
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The president of the Sacramento Homeless Union is calling out Mayor Darrell Steinberg after extreme weather tore through Northern California, leaving homeless encampments torn apart.
"He's been all talk and no action. It's time for him to go," said Crystal Sanchez, union president.
The Union said four members of the Sacramento homeless community died in the cold. The Sacramento County coroner has not confirmed that number.
"What the mayor and the city council may need to understand is that they've lost the trust of the unhoused community," Sanchez said.
Steinberg issued an impassioned plea for housing during Tuesday night's council meeting as the storm front was bearing down on downtown Sacramento. No warming centers were open.
The next night, the council unanimously approved an emergency ordinance opening warming shelters and downtown city garages for people living in cars.
"We have to do better, but there is no reason why we can not get large numbers of people indoors," Steinberg said.
Sacramento's homeless crisis and extreme weather is a combination that now has homeless advocates calling for the mayor's job.
Sanchez said Steinberg "has 72 hours to resign or we start the recall."
Sanchez said another reason she's singling out Steinberg is that he is the co-chair of a governor's state-wide task force on homelessness.
