Harry Potter Quidditch Tournament Draws Hundreds To Roseville
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) - Hundreds gathered in Roseville for a tournament of a game made popular by wizards and witches, all created by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.
Coming from as far away as Canada, teams gave a boost to the local economy in Placer Valley thanks to the Western Cup Quidditch Tournament.
"It's always a boost when you have out of town people staying at hotels, go out to eat," said Placer Valley Tourism CEO David Attaway.
The tournament has been in the works for about two years when Placer Valley bid to host the magical games.
"This is actually kind of nice because now Canada can come and it's easier for Utah to come," Western Regional Director Alexis Bristor said.
Placer Valley did their research and found out the tournament could draw hundreds. It did just that, drawing about 400 people for the weekend.
"We're spending money locally to have the tournament," said Bristor.
From parks and recreation fees to renting equipment, local businesses are getting a boost.
"We have our sights set on the world, to do the world event here, where people come from all over the world to play Quidditch," said Attaway.
That could mean thousands from all over the world would play the biggest Quidditch game of the year in Placer Valley. Not to mention the excitement Quidditch generates in the community.
"We can help promote literacy. People see Harry Potter and think 'oh this is cool. I should read those books,' " Game Play Director Kevin Oelze said.
The western regional tournament will continue Sunday, and the winner will advance to the world cup in Kissimmee, Florida in April.
