Handcuffed Suspect Escapes CHP Custody, Again
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Officers with the California Highway Patrol's North Sacramento office are looking for a suspect who escaped their custody Tuesday night, according to officials.
Officers detained and handcuffed the suspect after a vehicle pursuit that ended in Citrus Heights around 10 p.m. At some point after being handcuffed the suspect escaped the scene and fled near the area of Old Auburn Road and Antelope Road.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputies and Citrus Heights Police Officers were called into assist the CHP with locating the escapee but were unable to take the person back into custody, according to officers.
This is the fifth time since December 2015 that a handcuffed suspect has escaped CHP custody.
In August, a handcuffed suspect was being moved from one patrol car to another in El Dorado County when he escaped from officers. He was found and arrested a week later by El Dorado County Deputies.
In July, a handcuffed suspect managed to escape out of the back of a CHP patrol car in West Sacramento. West Sacramento Police were called in to help the capture the suspect.
In March, a member of CHP's auto theft task force had their vehicle stolen by a suspect auto thief after the handcuffed suspect was placed in the back of that vehicle. The man led authorities from CHP and Sacramento County on a chase through the Carmichael area. He was eventually taken back into custody.
In December of 2015, a man who had been handcuffed and detained in the back of patrol vehicle when he managed to get into the front seat of that vehicle and steal it, according to officials. The man led officers on a chase from Woodland to Sacramento before being taken back into custody. Court records show the man was heavily armed and under the influence of narcotics at the time of the incident.
