Guide to Fall Festivals

In agrarian areas such as ours, fall means harvest time. Hop in the car and taste some of our natural
resources at the Return of the Salmon Festival in Anderson and the Mountain Mandarin Festival in Auburn.

Fall also traditionally has been a time to gather together as community. Celebrate Sacramento rolled
out two new festivals earlier this year. The North Highlands Jubilee, also a Celebrated Sacramento event, is in its 10th year; this is the 44th year folks have been scrounging for treasures at the Fall Antiques
Street Fair in Auburn; and what began as a bass derby more than 60 years ago has grown into a multi-faceted celebration in Rio Vista with attractions for young and old.

Drop your line in the oldest fishing derby on the West Coast. Fishing not your bag? Race a soap box
car down Main Street Sat (ages 7-15) or peruse the 20th Annual Classic Car Show. Dare your tween to
a carnival ride or Karaoke duel. Cap off the day with fireworks Sat night at 8:30 p.m. There's a parade
down Main Street Sun at noon.

A volunteer steering committee plans and runs the festival every year. Kids' activities include bounce houses, games, and arts and crafts. There also will be music performances by local groups.

Check out Chinook salmon during their annual return to the hatchery from the Sacramento River. Learn about spawning, egg incubation, and rearing of young fish. Festival information booths focus on outdoor recreation and protection of our national resources. There will be children's activities and child fingerprinting. Ride the free shuttle buses to the hatchery from the Anderson Wal-Mart.

Search for treasures among displays by 200 vendors at the 44th annual Fall Antiques Street Fair in Auburn. Unlike similar events, this fair features antiques and collectibles only – no craft displays. Don't worry if you get addicted. There's a spring antiques fair too.

According to new research, the Synephrine in just 10 ounces of Placer Vounty's Owari Satsuma mandarins equates to the amount in a decongestant. Pick up bags of the "zipper fruit" from 15 local mandarin growers at the 18th annual festival. Mandarin-inspired crafts and activities include a recipe contest and cooking demonstrations. There's a free children's area and live music.
