Person shot while being chased by Grass Valley police responding to theft
GRASS VALLEY - One person is recovering in the hospital after being shot by police during a pursuit involving Grass Valley police on Wednesday.
According to the Grass Valley Police Department, at 4:18 p.m. on Wednesday, police were alerted to a possible theft in the 400 block of French Avenue. Officers responded to the scene and heard the sound of gunfire, police say. The person shot was later determined to be the initial caller who reported the theft.
Officers set up a perimeter to search for the suspect, later identified as Grass Valley resident Austin Wallace, 26. During that search, Wallace fired a shot at a California Highway Patrol officer who responded to the scene, police said.
That CHP officer was not injured.
Officers then chased Wallace on foot. During the chase, Wallace fired an additional shot at the officers. Two of the officers then fired return shots at Wallace, striking him at least once, police said.
Wallace and the initial victim were treated by the officers at the scene and were then taken to area hospitals for further treatment. The firearm Wallace is accused of using in the shooting was recovered as he was detained.
The Nevada County District Multi-Agency Officer Involved Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident.
