Grass Fire Burns Hundreds Of Acres Near Livermore
LIVERMORE (CBS SF) – A grass fire burned overnight near Interstate Highway 580 consumed around 400 acres before it was contained, fire officials said Friday morning.
The fire was reported around 9:30 p.m. Thursday near Patterson Pass and Flynn roads in an unincorporated area of Alameda County between Livermore and Tracy, according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Julie Hutchinson.
The area where the fire burned is largely open grassland, and there was no damage to structures or injuries reported, Hutchinson said. However, strong winds kept firefighters at the scene for most of the night.
"There was a pretty good wind last night coming off the Delta that was kind of funneling through that area, so it was primarily a wind-driven fire," Hutchinson said.
The fire was 100 percent contained around 8 a.m. today, but crews were still out at the scene later this morning.
The California Highway Patrol shut down portions of Patterson Pass Road overnight due to the fire, but everything was reopened by 8:54 a.m., said CHP Officer Shawna Pacheco.
The fire's cause remains under investigation. Hutchinson said there have been several grass fires in the same area in recent weeks, including one earlier on Thursday.
"It's an area that a lot of people travel through and there's a lot of very dry grass," she said. "We tell people, don't discard anything in the area, don't pull over in the dry grass and just be on the lookout."
