Gov. Brown Seeks Best Ways To Cut Government Waste
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Gov. Jerry Brown already has cut back on cell phones and vehicles for government employees. Now he's looking for even larger ways to reduce state government spending.
He has asked the state's top watchdog agencies to create "Top 10" lists for cutting waste and improving efficiency.
Brown sent letters this week to the state auditor and the Little Hoover Commission, a state oversight agency. He asked for their help tackling the state's nearly $27 billion budget gap, a move that could appease Republican lawmakers who say state government is bloated.
Brown, a Democrat, says "we must examine and re-examine every possible way to save taxpayer dollars."
Margarita Fernandez, a spokeswoman for the auditor, says the office should be able to meet the governor's March 4 deadline.
