Gore Closing In On 49ers' Franchise Rushing Record

SANTA CLARA (AP) — Frank Gore has been chasing rushing records since he first stepped on the field with the San Francisco 49ers six seasons ago.

He can catch up with one of the most significant in franchise history on Sunday.

Gore needs 22 yards rushing against the St. Louis Rams to become San Francisco's all-time leading rusher. The two-time Pro Bowl running back ranks sixth among the NFL's leading rushers this year with 909 yards, averaging 82.6 per game.

The seventh-year veteran can reach another milestone he has been pursuing since joining the 49ers: His first playoff berth. San Francisco (9-2) can end an eight-year playoff drought and clinch its first NFC West title since 2002 with a victory.

The late Joe Perry holds the franchise record with 7,344 yards. Gore passed Roger Craig for No. 2 on the list earlier this season.
