Good Samaritan Saves Sacramento Woman From Burning Home
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Pets were rescued from a burning house after a good samaritan saved the disabled owner from an out of control fire.
Relieved pets were plucked from the inside of a smoke-filled home in the arms of firefighters, but it was David Morones who saved their owner.
"She cannot walk," he said. "As soon as I seen the smoke, it went whoosh, and it got blacker and blacker."
Morones sprinted for the Emerson Road home when he spotted an older woman through the smoke.
"She was sitting on the front porch with the door open, and there was a bunch of smoke coming out," said Morones.
He says he helped get her in a wheelchair and took her to safety.
"I knew she had pets because I could see the dogs on her, and there was dogs running throughout the house," Morones said.
However, it became too dangerous for him to rescue the pets. That's when firefighters came racing in.
"Seven dogs and one cat were rescued," said Battalion Chief Scott Williams.
Eight pets were saved, but one dog, a cat, and three birds died in the fire. Four of the survivors headed to the vet.
"Some first and second degree burns on faces and undercoats," said Williams.
It was a harrowing few minutes of fire that could've ended in tragedy if it wasn't for a good samaritan and a team of firefighters racing in for the rescue.
Firefighters are not sure what caused the fire. They say it appears to have started in a bedroom, and then spread through part of the house and onto a wood patio.
