Good Samaritan Killed Helping Woman In Dixon Car Accident
DIXON (CBS13) - A good deed turned deadly in Dixon after a man died helping a crash victim along the freeway.
The unimaginable happened in the blink of an eye early Thursday morning.
"It's an unfortunate situation," California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Lehman said.
For a yet unknown reason, a car rolled over on eastbound Interstate 80, west of Dixon Avenue, CHP officials say, landing upside down with a woman still inside buckled in her seatbelt.
A good samaritan stopped to help her. As he tried to get the woman out of the overturned vehicle, another car slammed into him.
"In situations like this, things happen very quickly. You get caught up in the moment. There is a scene in front of you," said Lehman. "People don't come upon traffic collision scenes everyday, so there is a little bit of a sense of urgency in people's minds; and people tend to forget about there own safety when trying to render aid in a situation like this."
The man was life-flighted to a nearby hospital, where he would die.
"(The woman) was alert and alive following the collision," said Lehman. "She is at the hospital right now and she is being treated."
The accident scene did cause a major back up for people trying to get into Sacramento.
"We do our best to mitigate the traffic backup and at the same time, it is a high inconvenience to the public that are trying to get to where they have to go during commute hour," said Lehman.
CHP is still investigating the cause of the collision.
