Golden Gate Ferry Fares To Rise In '11

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Golden Gate Ferry riders who use discount transit cards will soon face higher fares.

The Golden Gate Bridge District's Board of Directors voted on Friday in favor of a 10 percent fare hike for those riders.

The Marin Independent Journal reports that the increase will go into effect on Jan. 1.

Ferry passengers who use the discount cards on trips from Larkspur to San Francisco will pay an additional 55 cents one-way, taking the total fare to $5.70. Those going from Sausalito to San Francisco will pay an additional 45 cents, making their one-way fare $4.85.

The changes would raise up to $591,000 in additional revenue for the cash-strapped bridge district, which is trying to plug a five-year deficit estimated at $89 million.
