Giants Send Duffy, Fox To Rays For Moore
The San Francisco Giants weren't done after trading for Eduardo Nunez and Will Smith before the MLB trade deadline apparently - they swapped for Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Matt Moore.
Moore, 27, is another left-handed pitcher for the Giants starting rotation and currently holds a 7-7 record with a 4.08 ERA. He will most likely bump either Matt Cain or Jake Peavy to the bullpen and pitch from the No. 4 spot.
The trade upgrades the end of the Giants rotation and they have team control over Moore until 2018.
Despite a mediocre year in 2016, Moore has an upside. He could potentially pitch like he did in 2013, where he had a 17-4 record, 3.29 ERA and made the AL All-Star team. Currently, he's pitched at least 6.0 innings in his last ten starts, including a 6.2-inning, four-hit shutout of the Dodgers on July 27.
Matt Duffy, who is the centerpiece of the trade heading back to Tampa, has had a down year riddled with injuries and slumps. He made his first rehab appearance with the Sacramento River Cats last weekend after hitting .253 in just 257 at-bats. After placing second in the NL Rookie of the Year votes in 2015, Duffy will head to the AL and mostl-likely back up All-Star Evan Longoria.
With Duffy on the way out, the Giants' recently-acquired Nunez will start at third base acting as a stopgap for top prospect Christian Arroyo.
Arroyo, 21, is currently playing in Double-A Richmond for the Flying Squirrels - and has split time between shortstop and third base this season.
Lucius Fox, a young shortstop prospect out of the Bahamas, has a long way until he is MLB-ready, but the Giants signed him at a young age of 18 as a high-ranked international prospect. Chris Shaw, who was first reported as a part of the trade, will not me moved.
Instead, the Giants included RHP Michael Santos, a 21-year-old prospect out of the Dominican Republic.
