Crews Cap Fiery Gas Leak Under Roseville Intersection
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) -- A busy Roseville intersection is reopened after an underground gas leak erupted in flames in the intersection of Cirby Way and Riverside Avenue on Tuesday night in Roseville.
Crews worked overnight and into the morning to cap the gas leak and repair the damaged roadway. the intersection opened just after 9:00 Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when a four-inch gas line ruptured underneath the street and was ignited by a spark when a car drove over it.
A section of the roadway about 20 feet by 10 feet erupted in flames and burned for several hours. PG&E crews dug down 50 feet down on either side of the leak to cap the section off.
It's actually the second time in a year the gas line has broken under the intersection. PG&E says the entire gas line is scheduled to be replaced.
"We understand that the pipeline that is in place here is in need of replacement so that's exactly what we want to do," said a PG&E spokesperson.
The spokesperson on scene was unable to tell CBS13 exactly when that replacement is scheduled.
