Garrido To Be Held In Same Prison Unit As Manson
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The California man sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping, raping and holding Jaycee Dugard captive for 18 years will have some notorious neighbors in prison.
The California Department of Corrections said Thursday that Phillip Garrido will be housed in Corcoran State Prison's Protective Housing Unit for inmates whom officials believe wouldn't be safe in the general population.
The unit is the longtime home of 1960s cult killer Charles Manson. Other inmates include John Albert Gardner III, who pleaded guilty last year to raping and killing two teens in San Diego County. The unit once housed convicted Robert F. Kennedy assassin Sirhan Sirhan.
Garrido arrived Thursday at Corcoran. The department says his wife, Nancy Garrido, began serving her decades-long sentence Wednesday at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla.
