Freeze Warning: Protect Plants, Pets
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to below freezing overnight, which means precautions need to be taken for plants and pets.
The temperature in downtown Sacrament is expected to drop to 31 degrees. The freeze warning from the National Weather Service is in effect from midnight until 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Talini's Nursery in Sacramento has been in business since 1976 so they've seen their share of freezing weather.
"Almost every year," said Talini's assistant manager Michael Lawrence.
And right around this time, early December chilly nights like these mean need to cover up those sensitive plants.
"Tropical, citrus certain succulents, you need to bring them close into the house or you can cover them," Lawrence said.
Plant protector bags and frost covers each run about $10 to $15, but you don't have to spend money to protect those plants.
"Regular towels are OK or if you have old sheets," Lawrence said.
Another option is to grab any extra Christmas lights lying around.
"Sometimes people string the large old Christmas lights in the plants. That creates enough warmth that it protects the plants," said Lawrence, who added that the newer LED lights don't give off enough heat to be effective.
Other steps to take during freezing weather: insulate exposed pipes and bring pets in doors or provide them with extra blankets.
The dry, cool air is expected to linger all week, with daytime highs in the upper 50s and overnight lows in the mid to low 30s.
