According to Sac City Fire Battalion Chief Niko King, the fire began in a pile of tires, but quickly spread to a pile of construction waste that contained a lot of wood. Employees tried to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher.

Several engines are battling the fire. North 7th Street is closed between Richards Boulevard and North B Street.

There are no reports of injuries, but the Sacramento Police Department has asked residents and businesses in the area to shelter-in-place due to the heavy smoke.

Employees at the State Office of Publishing have been sent home early due to smoke.
