Former Police Officer Given Life In Prison For Raping Women While On Duty
WOODLAND (CBS13) – A former West Sacramento Police officer has been sentenced to life in prison following his conviction on sexual assault charges.
Sergio Alvarez was convicted of sexually assaulting multiple women while on duty – and in uniform – for the West Sacramento Police Department back on Feb. 27. His charges included numerous counts of aggravated assault and rape.
"This is one of the most disgusting cases that I've ever seen, because it involved a police officer who abused his position of trust and sullied the badge," said Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig.
Just over a year ago, Alvarez was patrolling the streets of West Sacramento. Now he'll be wearing prison garb behind bars as part of a 205-years-to-life sentence on sexual assault and kidnapping charges.
Prosecutors say he raped women while on the job, sometimes even in his patrol car. At least five women were suspected of being coerced by Alvarez to have sex with him, prosecutors said.
"This is the longest sentence we're aware of for a police officer on duty committing these types of offenses," Reisig said.
He hopes the case will give courage to people who have been victimized by public officials to come forward.
