Folsom To End Affordable Housing Ordinance
FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) -- The city of Folsom is ending a nine-year-old ordinance that requires developers to provide affordable housing when they build large residential projects.
The Folsom City Council voted unanimously last week to stop the requirement, saying the mandatory program hasn't worked and hindered the development of market-rate projects.
The city instead plans to depend on builder incentives and voluntary measures to meet state affordable housing goals.
Folsom established the ordinance in 2002 after Legal Services of Northern California sued the city over its failure to provide housing for low-income residents.
Affordable housing advocates had urged the council to suspend elements of the mandate until the economy improves rather than abandon it altogether.
