Multiple Homes Catch Fire On Fairfield Residential Street
FAIRFIELD (CBS13) — Several homes have burned in a quick-moving vegetation fire that grew to seven alarms and engulfed part of a neighborhood near Interstate 80 in Fairfield.
At least five homes on Marigold Drive caught fire after embers from the vegetation fire jumped a sound wall, spread to a fence and then a shed, then over to a home. Strong winds then fanned the fire, which apparently jumped from roof to roof. As many as 10 homes could be involved.
Marigold Drive resident Darrell Prill spoke with CBS13's Steve Large as his home burned.
"There are trucks left and right. I see that my palm tree's on fire, my backyard's on fire, I see my roof starting to catch on fire, and I just thought I'd hop out of here," said Prill. "Out of all of the houses, my house is burned to a crisp. I keep on yelling to them to put out the fire in my house. I don't know, I don't see houses that look like my house right now."
"The good news is it's insured, the bad news is it's the only one I own in this state, and I'd like to be sleeping in it tonight," he added.
Fairfield High is being used as a designated shelter for evacuated residents.
