Firefighters Implementing Technology In Training

SAN BERNARDINO (CBS13) - Firefighters pulled a man from a fire in San Bernardino and it's all recorded on a helmet camera.

The house on North Tia Juana Street may provide valuable information for fire departments around the country.

The captain responding to the fire wore his own personal camera on his helmet.

The San Bernardino Fire Department allows several firefighters to turn on their own cameras for every call.

Division Chief Eric Esquivel was the incident commander that day.

"We use the analogy of the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl you can win the game, but they still go back and review tapes. That is what we try to do," said Esquivel.

After an internal review, the department will allow firefighters to post the video online.

He already knows to crawl as he gets in the house to make the rescue because of heavy smoke.

"The victim in this fire lived for a short time after it, but died at the hospital. Still, other fire departments around the country are learning from what happened here," said Edward Lawrence.

Esquivel says smaller departments will call and ask about procedures on fires they don't typically see. The video helps those firefighters understand the conditions.

"We can see what direction they went too. What communications they had inside, and we can fine tune what they are doing," said Esquivel.

And hopefully save a life in the next fire.
