Firefighters Battling Yuba County Brush Fire
SMARTSVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) – Downed power lines triggered a brush fire that quickly ballooned to more than 150 acres, and crews are working to contain the flames despite limited access to the area.
CAL FIRE officials said air and ground units assisted Saturday in firefighting efforts in a remote area of Yuba County north of Highway 20.
"The benefit of when you have a fire that's burning in the middle of nowhere is you don't have a lot of homes that are immediately threatened," said CAL FIRE spokesman Daniel Berlant. "The downside is that there isn't a lot of roads and access."
The fire began at about 4:00 p.m. shortly after residents reported a power outage in the region.
Firefighters said the blaze was about 25 percent contained Saturday night. No injuries have been reported.
Crews are focusing on keeping the fire from spreading past the river near Smartsville.
