Tank Explodes And Catches Fire At Petroleum Facility In Elk Grove
ELK GROVE (CBS13) - A petroleum tank caught fire and exploded at a petroleum tank farm in Elk Grove on Thursday morning.
Several units from the Cosumnes Fire Department were called out to Paramount Petroleum Corporation at 10090 Waterman Road, according to a Cosumnes Fire Department tweet.
Fifty firefighters were on scene battling flames after a 180,000 gallon tank filled with hot liquid used to make asphalt caught fire just before 10 a.m. Some of the liquid did spill but not enough to warrant a hazmat clean up crew, officials said.
"The product that spilled was right near the tank, so there's no consequence outside of the tank itself," said Deputy Chief John Michelini.
Michelini says that there have been a few incidents at the petroleum plant in the past 20 years, but overall has a good safety record.
The fire appears to be out, but firefighters say they are continuing to spray the tank to cool it down.
The cause of the explosion is still unknown.
