Westbound I-80 In Sierra Re-Opens After Fiery Big Rig Crash
GOLD RUN (CBS13) – Interstate 80 in the Sierra is re-open after a fiery crash involving two big rigs shut down all lanes of the busy freeway this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to CHP, a tractor trailer jack-knifed in the westbound lanes of I-80 just west of Crystal Springs Road just before 5:00 a.m. Another big rig loaded with hay attempted to avoid the jack-knifed truck but slammed into the center divide and burst into flames.
One of the first CHP officers on the scene tells CBS13, he thought the driver of the big rig carrying hay perished in the flames. However, both drivers were able to walk away from the accident unharmed.
One of the trucks was carrying hay bales. The other was carrying goods for Kohl's department store.
Traffic was temporarily diverted onto Highway 20. The roadway has since reopened.
