SACRAMENTO – A father faces 25 years to life in prison as he was convicted in the death of his 8-month-old daughter in 2019, Sacramento County prosecutors said on Wednesday.

A jury convicted Alexander Echeverria of the second-degree murder of his 8-month-old daughter Alexia Echeverria, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office said. They also found Alexander guilty of assault on a child resulting in death.

Prosecutors said Alexander took Alexia to Southern California and refused to return her. Alexia's body was then found abandoned on May 27, 2019.

Alexander fled to Mexico before he was arrested and returned to Sacramento County.

An autopsy determined Alexia suffered blunt force trauma to her head, leading to her death, prosecutors said.

Authorities said Alexia died in Sacramento but she was found dead in a car near a trash container outside a funeral home in Bellflower, a city in the greater Los Angeles area.

Alexander is scheduled to be sentenced on May 30, six years after his daughter's death.
