Famous Gold Country Candy Shop Robbed At Knife-Point
TUOLUMNE COUNTY (CBS13) – Tuolumne County Sheriff's Deputies have arrested a Sonora man after he allegedly robbed a well-known Gold Country candy shop.
On Saturday, deputies were called to the Columbia Candy Kitchen in Sonora for reports of an armed robbery.
An employee said a man came into the candy store armed with a large knife and demanded money. The employee handed over $160 from the cash register and the man put the money in a sack.
Deputies say their investigation led them to question 23-year-old John Robert Olguin. A search of Olguin's vehicle turned up a large knife and a sack matching the one used in the robbery.
The Columbia Candy Kitchen employee also identified Olguin as the suspect.
Olguin has been booked into the Tuolumne County Jail on first-degree robbery charges.
The Columbia Candy Kitchen in Sonora is one of three stores. The flagship location is in the Columbia State Historic Park where most of the candies are made using century-old copper kettles and marble tables.
