Famous Bay Area Hotel Files For Bankruptcy
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa nestled in the hills above Berkeley has filed for bankruptcy.
Tuesday's bankruptcy filing included four other luxury hotels around the country that the group CNL-AB seized from Morgan Stanley during a foreclosure auction last week.
The Claremont and the other hotels will continue to operate during the bankruptcy.
The 279-room Claremont was built in three phases between 1915 and 1988. It has hosted the likes of Louis Armstrong, but has more recently fallen on hard times as the recession has reduced luxury spending. A night at the hotel can cost more than $400.
The other hotels included in the bankruptcy filing are: La Quinta Resort & Club in the Southern California desert; the Grand Wailea Resorts Hotel & Spa in Maui, Hawaii; the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami and the Arizona Biltmore.
