Twitter Suspends Fake Boston Marathon Account Promising Donations To Victims
(CBS13) - First responders were not the only ones to quickly act Monday after the tragic explosions at the annual Boston Marathon -- scammers were as well.
Twitter has suspended a fake Boston Marathon account (@_BostonMarathon) asking for re-tweets. And in exchange, it says it would make a $1 donation to the victims of Monday's explosions. The real Boston Marathon account is @BostonMarathon.
The fake account received more than 50,000 re-tweets and was favored more than 800 times before the microblogging website suspended the account.
Around 2:50 p.m., two bombs exploded near the finish line of the famous race, killing several people and hurting more than 100 others.
CBS13 reached out to Twitter for comment but did not receive a response.
