Employees Turn Tables On Armed Robber
FAIRFIELD, Calif. (CBS13) -- An armed robbery suspect failed to steal any cash from a restaurant after employees fought back, stripping away his shotgun and holding him at gunpoint.
Surveillance video shows a masked gunman entering the Wing Stop on the 1600 block of Gateway Boulevard just after midnight Thursday and aiming a shotgun at an employee's head, demanding cash from the register and safe.
The employee batted the gun away from his face repeatedly and told the suspect that the manager was the only person with access to the safe, and when the conversation escalated, the employee suddenly grabbed the shotgun, wrestling with the suspect and even chasing him out of the shop when he fled.
Another employee leaped into the fray and helped subdue the now-disarmed suspect, and yet a third employee helped force the man back inside the store and called police.
The store manager said the robber apologized and begged to be released; saying he never intended to shoot anyone and just wanted the money.
After the employee who resisted him only a few minutes earlier spoke with the suspect, the two men shook hands and the suspect fled the store, without his gun and without his cash.
Fairfield officers were unable to locate the man in the area. Investigators described the suspect as a black male adult, about 25 years old with short hair, about 5'9" tall and weighing about 150 pounds.
Authorities said fighting back during a robbery can often end tragically and said officers simply need victims to act as witnesses and provide a good description of the suspect.
Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to contact the Fairfield Police Department at (707) 428-7300.
