Emotions Run High As Man Charged With Killing Placer County Teens In DUI Crash
PLACER COUNTY (CBS13) — Emotions ran high in a Placer County courtroom as a man accused of striking and killing two Placer High teens faced charges on Tuesday.
Authorities say Phillip Ingram was under the influence at the time of the crash on Sunday and is now charged with felony manslaughter.
Family and friends had an opportunity to talk about their loved ones and to speak out against Ingram.
In between parking lot hugs and comforting one another, family and friends of Trevor Keller and Jared Gaches took the time to remember their loved ones outside the Placer County Courthouse on Tuesday.
Trevor's former football coach, John Trull, remembered him fondly.
"Just full of live; absolutely full of life," he said.
Ingram was shielded by his attorney who argued that cameras should be removed from the courtroom as they could pollute the jury pool. That request was denied.
Ingram was formally charged with two counts of felony manslaughter and a separate charge of hit-and-run for reportedly hitting a parked car moments before plowing into the teens on Highway 49 on Sunday.
The California Highway Patrol says the teens were doing everything right as they made their way to a coffee shop. A third boy was there as well, and survived.
The judge allowed the victims' families to come forward and speak.
Jared's mother told the judge, "My son will forever be in a box and [Ingram] deserves the same thing."
Ingram was not granted bail.
