ELK GROVE – The City of Elk Grove is having an open house on Tuesday at the new year-round homeless shelter, set to be open and operating next month.

The facility will be at the Calvary Christian Center on E. Stockton Boulevard, with plans to help up to 35 people at a time.

Officials say the plan is for the shelter to stay in operation for three to four years while the city works to find a permanent shelter location.

The shelter's residents will be referred to the program by the city's homeless services navigators.

It will also have five beds open for emergencies like severe weather.

A non-profit organization called The Gathering Inn is running the facility. They ran the city's "enhanced winter sanctuary" where 20 of the 62 unhoused individuals in the program were eventually able to secure permanent housing.

The Gathering Inn and the City of Elk Grove are hoping this year-round shelter will generate even bigger results. They're inviting the public to come check out the facility Tuesday evening from 4-7 p.m.

Funding for the shelter comes from a mix of federal, state, and local Measure E funds.
