Elk Grove Businesses Furious Over Unexpected Road Work
ELK GROVE (CBS13) — Elk Grove businesses are saying construction work is costing them customers.
A $700,000 project is meant to fill in one of the last stretches in Elk Grove Boulevard without sidewalks—a 650-foot segment west of Waterman Road.
Nearby businesses say the work is costing them business.
"We've had customers call and cancel appointments," said Valerie Single with Automotive Solutions.
"We've been like dead in the water the past two days," said Barry Olmstead with River City Spas.
"Customers can't get in; I can't get parts delivered to me; I can't get in and out of my shop," said Mike Single with Automotive Solutions.
An Elk Grove spokesperson says street sign warnings were up two weeks before work began, flyers were left on doors, and letters were mailed to property owners.
But since Valerie Single leases her auto shop's space, she never got one.
"I would think they would send it to the business," she said. "I mean the owners, not the one running the building."
None of the businesses are opposed to the safer sidewalks, but they wish the city had taken more steps to reduce the impact.
The city says crews are working with the businesses to leave gaps so cars can get in. Construction is scheduled to be completed by October.
