UPDATE: Elderly Man Dies After Hit-And-Run In Stockton
STOCKTON (CBS13) – An elderly man was killed after being hit by a vehicle just feet from his home late Wednesday night, authorities said.
The Stockton Police Department said the 86-year-old victim, Ernie Tirapelli, was struck near the intersection of El Dorado Street and Benjamin Holt Drive shortly after 9:30 p.m.
The man's grandson said his grandfather suffered from dementia and was being cared for by family members but that no one heard him walk out of the house.
No witnesses reported seeing the collision, and the driver sped off before the Tirapelli's family could rush outside after hearing the crash.
Tirapelli was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he later died.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m., a vehicle with a flat tire and front-end damage swerved through the crime scene and sped off. CBS13 footage shows officers on the scene chasing after the driver with guns drawn, and the female driver of the vehicle was detained.
Police, however, on Thursday said the driver was not arrested and is not a suspect.
