Elderly man suffers broken leg, fractured hip in Riverbank hit-and-run
RIVERBANK — A search is underway for a vehicle that hit an elderly man who was on his daily morning walk last weekend in Riverbank, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.
It happened sometime between 5 and 5:30 a.m. Saturday in the area of Terminal and Townsend avenues.
According to the sheriff's office, Venustiano Duarte, 84, suffered a broken arm and fractured ankle. He remains in the ICU but was stable at last check.
The suspect vehicle was only described as possibly being a medium-sized SUV.
After the vehicle that struck Duarte fled, a second driver noticed Duarte was down and stopped to help him but didn't call 911, authorities said. Investigators said it was unknown if that second driver witnessed the collision or arrived afterward, but they were looking to speak with him to obtain further information related to the incident.
It wasn't until two days later that law enforcement was contacted and Duarte was taken to an area hospital for treatment, authorities said.
Anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation should contact the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office.
